The Mohawks of Akwesasne- Community Trust fund was applied for by the ATR Club to fulfil the need of a safe and maintained trail system for all Akwesasronon to utilize. Due to the geography of the territory, we have multiple hazards that have been introduced to the existing trails such as new residential housing, roadways, and frozen water way crossings. The use of frozen waterway crossings by Community Members for Snowmobile use has not been beneficial and unfortunate. Within our passionate group, we have all been affected by the loss of a friend or family member whom lost their life due to a snowmobile: frozen waterway accident. Our project initiative promotes the use of maintained, safe, permissible trails that diverts snowmobilers from traveling on frozen waterways to land based trails maintained by Neighboring club much like us and lead to the sanctioned New York State Trail System.
Before the ground became frozen we installed our trail signs throughout the trail system. Pictured are stop signs, trail directional signs, and respect landowner sign. Our members designed and made our own trail reflectors with metal container covers and hi-viz reflector tape. Before the ground became frozen we installed our trail signs throughout the trail system. This waterway is known to be misjudging to riders due to its depth and characteristic of thawing quickly making it unsafe to cross.
Design and build 8’x 24’ Bridge which spanned a 14’ stormwater irrigation ditch within the trail system.
This is a high motor vehicle traffic area along State Route 37. Before the bride was built snowmobilers had to leave the trail and ride the shoulder of the road avoiding a steel grate culvert.
Design and build 5’x 16’ Bridge which spanned a 12’ black water irrigation ditch within the trail system.
When Ionkwakiohkwaróron was built, improvements to the existing storm water drainage needed to be made therefore the bridge that was at this location had to be removed. The pre-exiting bridge was constructed from timber logs and deteriorated lumber at which was demolished during its removal. This was hazardous to our trail system to any rider that could take the trail mistakenly and crash into the waterway.
